Cigars How To Pick The Right Cigar
Hand-made cigars are complex by nature, and will not taste the same to everyone. When you enjoy a cigar, you use all of your senses so everything about that cigar works in harmony to deliver a great experience: proper construction, types and ages of tobacco, humidity of the cigar, color of the ash, burn rate, among many other things.
Picking a great cigar is just like ordering a drink. If we ask, "What would you like to drink?" Your answer might depend on the occasion, the time of the day, or even your mood.
During breakfast, you might want sparkling water, a natural juice, or even a mimosa to go with your meal. After a long day at work, you might want a beer or a glass of wine. If you are celebrating an important day, you might want a glass of scotch or a martini.
Picking a cigar is just like that. So... let’s get started and help you pick the best cigar for you or the person you are thinking about.
Cigar Decisions And The Wanderlust Syndrome
Maybe you are here choosing cigars because you suffer from the incurable Wanderlust Syndrome. Wanderlust is a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.
Regardless of whether you are choosing a cigar for yourself or someone else, we understand you are looking for cigars because you are an explorer.
If you are not a cigar connoisseur, you will quickly learn that cigars represent a new world to explore. The cigar world is sophisticated, complex, and part of those finer things in life that people enjoy like no other.
Traveling and exploring a new place is always exciting, but it can also be overwhelming.
Have you ever needed a vacation from a vacation?
Our goal is to help you explore the cigar world without being overwhelmed. You might be looking to try a new cigar, your first cigar, or flirting with the idea of gifting cigars. In any case, we will go over some basic, important things to keep in mind when choosing cigars.
Cigar enthusiasts have learned over the years, through many experiences (good and bad), some important guidelines to follow when selecting cigars. Here, we offer you a crash course that packs years of knowledge in just a few minutes.
These tips will be helpful especially if you are someone:
- Looking to learn more about cigars.
- Not familiar with cigars.
- Choosing cigars for a gift.
If you are one of the above, we have some simple tips you want to ALWAYS follow when choosing cigars:
Never Trust Machines
Rolling cigars is an artisan’s craft.
Unlike so many other traditional crafts, hand rolling cigars is not a craft that will be fading away in the next few years. Master rollers are actively teaching techniques to new generations taking over the art of cigar rolling.
Hand rolled cigars are far superior to machine-made cigars in every way...
... Well, to be fair, perhaps not every way since machine-made cigars are cheaper than those made by hand. But, you get what you pay for.
Cigars made with machines are very different than hand-rolled cigars. They are typically cheap, sold in convenience stores, use low-quality fillers, and might use artificial ingredients in the wrapper to be able to withstand the machine’s pressure instead of using all-natural wrappers.
For your first cigar, please do not try a machine-made cigar...
... You will thank us for it.
In general, handcrafted items are not necessarily better than their manufactured counterparts. In many industries, automated manufacturing has replaced manual labor because it is not only cheaper and more efficient, but because the products are indeed better and of higher quality.
However, that is not the case in the cigar industry.
Different Strokes for Different Folks
As a cigar enthusiast, you would know exactly what kind of flavor profiles you enjoy. However, when you first start exploring the cigar hobby or just need to choose cigars for someone else, you can easily get lost in a sea of variety.
And, in case you were wondering, there is no silver bullet to know exactly what everyone will like.
However, you can use our knowledge and experience to make good decisions that will help you get started with the right cigar.
There are thousand of good options out there when you account for flavor profiles, sizes, shapes, brands, etc. And, like many other issues in the world, there is no exact “formula” to “calculate” what the right option is for you.
At Xurvivor cigars, we are very practical. We have taken a step back, simplified the problem, and came up with what we think is a great recommendation to get you started.
Please be mindful that if you ask 10 experts, you will most likely get 10 different answers. In a way, all those answers will be correct! But what is correct anyway? When preferences are involved, choices are subjective and closely related to experience.
So, keeping all that in mind… You might still want a simple (but sound) way to choose cigars and get you started. So, here it goes...
Who is the cigar for?
Cigars for Someone Who is NEW to Cigars
We recommend a Robusto with a Connecticut wrapper. This would be a short size, smooth, and mild-bodied cigar.
Cigars for Someone Who is NOT NEW to Cigars
We recommend a Toro with a Habano wrapper. This would be a longer size, complex, bolder, flavorful cigar.
Yea, we know that might not mean much to you right now. So, let’s explain our logic.
A Robusto cigar is a popular, smaller size cigar that measures 5 inches long (12.7 cm). A Toro is a larger size at 6.5 inches (16.51 cm). You would probably guess that shorter cigars can be smoked faster than longer ones. This might be the difference between a wonderful first smoke experience and a not so wonderful one.
Think about a speech being presented to you, about a topic you don’t know much about.
Sitting through a two hour long speech might ruin your learning experience even when the topic was indeed interesting to you.
You heard the expression short and sweet? A shorter speech might be enough for you to get the main ideas behind the topic, and peak your interest to learn more about it in the future. However, if you are an expert in the subject, you will probably appreciate a longer, in-depth information session about the same topic.
After choosing the cigar size, the next step is to select the flavor profile. The simplest way to do that is to carefully select the cigar’s wrapper. The wrapper leaf can determine anywhere from 60% to 90% of the cigar’s overall flavor.
In simple terms, a Connecticut wrapper is a light-bodied tobacco wrapper. A Habano wrapper is a darker, full-bodied leaf. Commonly, the wrapper is a good indication of the flavor profile of a cigar.
A milder cigar would represent a smoother and slower-paced introduction to the cigar world.
Remember the first time you drove a car? You didn’t jump on the busiest highway right away. You took your time in a slower neighborhood first.
So, a Robusto with a Connecticut wrapper is a great combination when selecting a cigar for someone who is new to cigars, while a Habano Toro is a better choice for a cigar aficionado or someone ready to start trying more complex cigars.
